Ever since I got the call that Tante Grad had passed away, memories have come flooding back. Even though there is an ocean between us, she holds a special place in all our hearts here. She has made several visits to Canada and travelled with our mother on trips that were so special. My mother happily reminisced and laughed about the wonderful time in Zambia and her other favourite trip to Montenegro. Tante Grad was here for many important milestones in our mother’s life. What a time we all had in 2004 celebrating 50 years in Canada for my mother-a time we won’t soon forget, especially the skit all the sisters performed. Your mom came to love garage sales over here. I believe that she and Tante Mientje each had to buy-at a garage sale of course-an extra suitcase to take their new treasures home. They showed their playful side and our children could not get enough of them after that. Your mother showed her true compassion and loving ways by coming not once but twice to help our mother recuperate after her surgeries. The first time she came, my mother was not out of the hospital yet so she stayed with us at our home. Treasured memories for my children as Tante Grad taught them dutch words and sentences, like please pass the chocolate milk and thank you. Each night we played wahoo and the kids had to count in dutch and Tante Grad in english. Together they learned and laughed. She always had a ready smile or ear to sit and listen to our fears about our mom and what was to come. I remember fun times shopping together and showing her how beautiful the frozen Niagara Falls looks. We also did a maple syrup tour in March. During this tour, your poor mother had slipped in the mud and hurt her leg and got a terrible rash that bothered her from our walk in the woods. She went to see the doctor about this when she got back to Holland. When Rob and I travelled to Holland we stayed with Tante Grad. She was a gracious hostess and opened her home to us. With her I was able to talk about my mom and have some very special heart to hearts, for me cherished times. Rob was the cook and your mother loved his beer can chicken on the barbeque. We so loved sitting in her back yard and taking in all the beauty. We remember how your mother enjoyed the “cousin reunions” and seeing everyone. She would make a point to talk to as many as she could at these happy occasions. She was proud of her family and was glad that many came. We were so thankful to be there—these were so special for us. I could go on with so many more memories but I will stop there. I hope that from these few snippets of memories with your mother, you will see how much she meant to us, especially me. She truly was one of kind and will always hold a special place in our hearts for all her love and caring ways. Our family has been enriched by knowing and loving her-we will miss her. We hope that your memories will help you with your loss and be a comfort. How blessed we are that she was in our lives. You truly had a remarkable mother. Our prayer for your dear mother: The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The Lord life up His countenance on you, And give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 With our heartfelt sympathy,

The phone call this morning prompts our memories of your mother which we send to you and your extended family. For us here in New Zealand she was THE auntie to whom we all went on our visits to Holland. She introduced us to our Netherlands family, the village and relatives, and shared and showed us all the good things particularly relevant to our history and whatever she could about this country of our origin. For this we are forever thankful and we have the most fantastic memories. A more generous loving and kind aunt who took us all in, we could never have had or imagined. We thought she was smiley, friendly, hospitable, a lover of her family and friends, an astute woman with a keen mind who was willing to learn new things, always beautifully dressed and presented, thrifty yet generous, one who enjoyed nature, outdoors, her home surroundings and particularly her garden. She was accepting and non-judgemental, interested in people and readily able to engage in conversation. She was quick witted and had a good sense of humour so with her there was lots of laughter. She understood the balance between work and leisure and sought to keep herself healthy and well with exercise and mental stimulation particularly reading and writing, as well as craft work, recreation and fun. We knew that her life had not always been easy and without dwelling on the hard and sad times she did share and we appreciate her faith and strength as a wonderful example of keeping on keeping on all through life. I know she was the sister very close to Mum with their connection by age, having married brothers, family composition and then in each having many years of widowhood. My mum immensely valued and enjoyed the contacts they had. Our Mum is not so able to express herself now -neither in Dutch nor English but she has said she looks forward to meeting up again in heaven. In closing I think of this reading from Proverbs which I have adapted as to me it personifies your mother. A capable, intelligent and virtuous woman -who can find? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls. Her husband trusts her confidently and relies on and believes in her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. She comforts, encourages, and does him only good all the days of her life. She shops around and works with willing hands. She is like a trading ship that sails to faraway places and brings back exotic surprises. She rises while it is still night, prepares food, organises her family and her day. She considers a new field before she buys or accepts it and with her savings she plants a garden. She dresses herself for work, rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started. She senses the worth of her work and the gain is good. Her lamp does not go out but burns on through the night of trouble, privation, or sorrow warning away fear doubt or sorrow. She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking. She opens her hands to the poor and reaches out to assist the needy. She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for warm, winter clothing and coverings are all ready. She makes and sells and dresses in colourful linens and silks. Her clothing is well made and elegant and she always faces tomorrow with strength, dignity and a smile. She rejoices over the future for she and her family are ready for it. When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say and she says it kindly. She looks well on how things go in her household, keeps them all busy and productive. The bread of idleness, gossip, discontent or self-pity she will not eat. Her children respect and bless her, call her happy fortunate and to be envied and her husband joined in with words of praise. Many women have done wonderful things virtuously, nobly, and well with strength of character that is steadfast in goodness but you have outclassed and excelled them all! Charm can mislead and beauty fades but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord is to be admired and praised. Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, every good thing she deserves and festoon her life with praises! With love and blessing to you all at this time Nancy On behalf of my brothers and sisters too.
